The United States in a tough predicament, allowing so much manufacturing to move to China that it depends on the Asian nation for most of its antibiotics, prescription drugs, and medical supplies. The Communist Party is now hinting it may impose pharmaceutical export controls that could plunge America into “the mighty sea of coronavirus.”
Currently the coronavirus, which had its first known outbreak in Wuhan, China, has killed 5,120 people around the globe, with the total number of confirmed cases at 139,579.
Is China threatening to withhold medications from the US?
The United States has allowed itself to become almost entirely dependent on China for its medications and medical supplies.
An article this week in Xinhua, China’s state-run media agency, which is largely considered the mouthpiece of the Party, suggested that it could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into “the mighty sea of coronavirus.”
America currently obtains 90% of its antibiotics from China. The majority of the US federal government’s medical equipment is also manufactured there.
Already, China has prevented the export of surgical facemasks, which has severely limited US supplies, as well as those of other countries around the globe.
In the article, Beijing also boasted over its handling of COVID-19. Coronavirus originated in the city of Wuhan, before quickly spreading around the world.
“Buy American” Trump executive order seeks to end America’s reliance on China for medical needs
The problem of America’s dependence on China for providing its pharmaceuticals and medical supplies did not begin with the Trump administration. The off-shoring of manufacturing goes back many decades.
However, the reliance on a foreign nation for vital medical supplies is something the Trump administration seeks to bring to an end.
This week, the White House announced that the Trump administration is drafting an executive order that will and America’s dependence on China for pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
The new legislation dubbed “Buy American” will prevent federal agencies from purchasing medical supplies from China.
China and America sparring over coronavirus
Rumors and accusations between the United States and China are furiously flying back and forth. Outside of official channels, conspiracy theories are rampant in both the East and West.
China is becoming incensed as officials in the US refer to coronavirus as a “foreign virus” and have also referred to the virus early on as the “Wuhan virus.”
However, the head of China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention previously stated that the source of the virus came from wild animals sold at a market in the central city of Wuhan.
However, as blame ping-pongs back and forth between the US and China, Chinese officials have stated in recent days that the virus may have originated outside of Wuhan, even in the US.
China blames the US for coronavirus
By now, most people in the West have heard conspiracy theories that the coronavirus escaped from a biological weapons testing lab in Wuhan. In the East, conspiracies say the US military brought the coronavirus to Wuhan.
But conspiracy theories are now extending to government levels in China. A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, tweeted a claim that the United States military brought the coronavirus to Wuhan.
The claim echoes similar conspiracy theories that are beginning to proliferate on Chinese social media blaming America for the pandemic.
