Not everyone wants to chase the latest fashion trends. Not only is it costly, it’s also exhausting. Luckily for guys, we have a baseline of timeless fashion that works in every decade and doesn’t stand out as unfashionable. To top it off, being considered “old fashioned” when it comes to men’s clothing is hardly a bad thing. These looks are timeless for a reason.
Here are our tips for young men looking to achieve a classic style without breaking the bank.
Tip #1: Plan to Keep Your Style Simple
A lot of guys confuse classic for formal and end up spending way too much money up front for clothing items that they end up rarely wearing. So, let’s make one thing clear: classic style is NOT always formal.
Your beginning goal is to upgrade your wardrobe, not toss it all and start over. So, take stock of what you have and start thinking about what kinds of upgrades you need. Are your jeans all old, faded and worn out? There’s a good start for you: quality denim.
Tip #2: Try On Expensive Clothes
This may seem a little disingenuous, but in order for you to be able to identify quality clothing, you really need to find out how it feels on your body.
This is why you should head over to a nice menswear store and try on clothing. Find out what you like and what feels good. Take note of the cut, the weight and the general feel of the clothes. Note the price and then put the clothes back on the rack. This baseline knowledge will help with a future tip especially.
Tip #3: Learn Some Sewing Basics
If your budget prevents you from using a tailor, then it’s time to break out the needle and thread and get comfortable. At the very least, you’ll want to be able to sew buttons and hem pants.
Much like learning to change your own oil, learning to do some basic tailoring can save you a lot of money in the long run.
Tip #4: Thrift
Now that you’ve tried on some expensive clothing and have dabbled in basic tailoring skills, it’s time to hit the local thrift stores.
It can be hit-or-miss, but there’s no denying that amazing deals can be found at local thrift shops. There are a lot of reasons to donate clothing that have nothing to do when them being worn-out. Find those items and put your new tailoring skills to use.
With a little time and effort, you could pick up some high-dollar items that fit great and make you look like a timelessly classic man.
